The human hand has 5 layers of skin as opposed to the 4 layers everywhere else. That’s why our palms aren’t strongly pigmented! The additional layer makes it difficult to see secreted melanin, making our palms appear lighter than everywhere else on our bodies. We’re the only primate that doesn’t have strong pigmentation in this place!
